Wine

During Kurt's training at the hotel & restaurant school he spent his summers in the Wachau Valley learning all he could about the wine making process. It was there that Kurt truly grasped the importance of the interplay between food and wine and developed a great appreciation for the wine of the region. The wines of the Wachau Valley are heavily featured in his restaurants today.

The vineyards in Austria lie for the most part in the east and southeast of the country. White wines undoubtedly make up the larger portion, but it would be unfair to think of Austria just in terms of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Wachau.  Austria is a country with a range of different climates and vineyard regions producing a diversity of wine styles, including some great sweet wines and even some serious reds.

During the twentieth century there was a massive change in the culture of wine production in Austria, with a great emphasis towards quality.  Today Austria lies 17th in the list of wine producing countries by volume, and produces high quality wines that are considered some of the best in the world.  The country is also home to Riedel, makers of the most outstanding wine glasses, which we carry in our restaurants.
